Journal
of Vedic Astrology 2004 - Editorial
The IIVA has taken up research projects on subjects - knowledge of
which has been obscure or was held by few hidden in mystery and
enigma. They were not made explicitly clear to astrologers.
Sarvatobhadra Chakra,
with 81 cells, is the Trailokya Deep with lights the all three Lokas
and is the most auspicious of all the charkas and charts. Kavi
Narpati recorded it in Narpatijayacharyaswarodaya in the 12th
century. In the same book Kavi Narpati described Swar Shastra
through 20 Swar charkas and detailed the method of their use for
prediction.
The knowledge of Swarodaya was one of the
most secretly guarded secrets, kept in the minds of the Maharishis.
Kavi Narpati put them into Sanskrit shlokas in the 12th
century for the first time. The translation of these shlokas was
also in Sanskrit and it took an effort of about two years of
research to bring clear meanings to them, which enabled in the
writing of a paper on the same with three case studies. These papers
on Sarvatobhadra Chakra and Swar Shastra Jyotish were later on
published in the Journal of Astrology.
Updesa (Jaimini Sutras)
are riddled with certain degree of mysticism partly because the
Maharishi Jaimini chose to write in indicative Sutras couched in
Katapayadi language for signs and houses and partly they have some
gaps here and there giving rise speculation or of import of
predictive knowledge from Parashara to fill in the gaps. This has
given rise to number of conflicting commentaries by number of
eminent scholars, who in their wisdom gave best possible
explanations of the Sutras. Though they provide a powerful
predictive tool in the hands of astrologers, these conflicting
commentaries caused confusion, even in the minds of discerning
readers.
The Jaimini research project attempted to
delineate the essence of Jaimini Sutras after a careful and holistic
study of commentaries on Jaimini Sutras. The number, sex and
sequence of children and co-borns are some the important questions
posed to an astrologer. Jaimini Sutras provide methodology for the
same. Two papers entitled ‘Jaimini Sutra – Demystification of
Co-borns and progeny’ Part I on co-borns and Part II on progeny
published with ten case studies each to corroborate the method
proposed.
Longevity of a
native has also attracted the attention of the astrologer quite
often. Parashara provides general dasha/antardasha methods and also
various mathematical methods for longevity determination. However,
there are wide variations of results, when compared from actual, in
various methods. Jaimini Sutras provide four powerful methods of
longevity determination. For timing, it also provides four Ayur
dashas, namely Navamsha, Sthir, Brahma and Niryan Shoola Dashas.
After a deep
study of the Jaimini Sutras coupled with different commentaries, a
holistic and integrated technique have been proposed for the exact
applicability of longevity methods of Jaimini Sutras in the paper on
‘Jaimini Sutras and Longevity Determination’.
It includes determination of Brahma and Maheshwara and Rudra
for native and his relatives; maraka dasha/antardasha and
calculation of Navamsha, Shoola, Sthir and Brahma dasha/antardasha
with large number of case studies.
I hope these papers will fulfill the long
felt need in different areas of Vedic Astrology for day-to-day use
by the astrologers and also by those who wish to learn these
techniques.
