Journal of Vedic Astrology 2006 - Editorial
Samhita is one of the three branches of Jyotish – Hora, Tantra & Samhita. Varahamihira in his classic work Varahi (Brihat) Samhita lays down the foundation of Samhita. There are many other classical treatises and commentaries by other authors. Varahi Samhita is the main fountain of classical knowledge and is an excellent treatise  on the subject. Samhita further consists, primarily, of three parts – Astro-meteorology – predicting weather, Mundane – predicting fate of countries/rulers and predicting Commodity Pricing trend.

There are many commentaries on the subject but none has given comprehensive summary of rules with explanatory case studies. In order to fill up the long-felt need of the astrologers and provide working guide lines to use the rules in their day-to-day prediction in Samhita an integrated research project was launched in the IIVA last year. The objective was to arrive at systemic enumeration of rules of interpretation on all the branches of Samhita and produce series of case studies to elucidate the use of the rules.

The papers on Astro-meteorology consist of Science of Rain in India and The Principles of Astro-meteorology in Predicting Weather. These two combined contain all the necessary knowledge on weather phenomena as given in classics and commentaries. They consist of rules for predicting long-range, medium range and short range rain forecast. They also include interpretation of the Ardra Parvesh chart, Sapta Nadi chakra.  Interpretation of various other chakras for weather forecast - Samudra chakra, Stri-Purush chakra, Ravi Chandra yoga chakra and Megha Dwar chakra. The Vrishti Yoga – astrological combinations for rains for day-to-day prediction are also included along with Uday/Asta of Venus and weather, and weather result of Sun’s ingress in different signs, animal’s, bird’s and plant’s behaviour and rains, natural phenomenon and rains and prashna & rain These are supplemented with  number of case studies.

Paper on Mundane Astrology consists of mundane significations of signs, houses and planets.  Interpretation of Mundane charts – Hindu New Year chart, Solar Ingress charts, Moon Lunation charts and Solar and Lunar eclipse charts. Interpretation of Sanghatta Rasi & Nakshatra chakras, Koorma Chakra and Sarvatobhadra chakra are also included. This is supplemented by four case studies.

Paper on Commodity Price Trend consists of Nakshatras and Commodities, auspicious Nakshatra and Vaar for buying & selling, Planets and Commodity, Commodity Price and Sarvatobhadra Chakra, “Govardhan Padhati” for predicting commodity prices with case studies. It is supplemented with a paper on Sookshma Tithi, Nakshatra, Rashi, Vaar, Direction, Anand Yogas, Samvatsar & Barhaspatya Year.

The research papers of this issue meet the long felt need of the astrologers for in-depth analysis and use the principles of Mundane Astrology and Astro-meteorology in a composite way to understand how the cosmic forces affect individuals, society, nation and international events.
